Wealden District Council (WDC) is proposing to build 300 new homes in Crowborough as part of their Core Strategy. The Strategic Sites document presenting the various options for where these houses should be built is now open for public consultation. The consultation period runs until 24th February 2012. WDC is also holding an exhibition at the Pine Grove council offices on Saturday 4th February between 10.00 and 13.00.

The Strategic Sites document can be read in full on the WDC website here
Click on the link to “Strategic Sites Development Plan Document Issues and Options Consultation Paper”. This page also gives details on how to participate in the consultation process. For a summary of the options detailed in the Strategic Sites document, see our previous article here.

This consultation window is the key opportunity for Crowborough residents to have their say in WDCs strategic housing plans for Crowborough. Once approved, building on these sites will become Wealden’s official planning policy. Unfortunately, this does not mean that other sites in Crowborough won’t also be developed as part of the usual planning application process, but the strategic sites will be the focus of new development.

Apart from issues with access and infrastructure, many of the proposed sites are on greenfield land. These include most of the options for 160 new houses in the Plough & Horses / Walshes Road area (SDA10 in the WDC document), and land at Palesgate Lane (SDA9). In addition, the proposal to build on land at Tollwood Road could impact upon the biodiversity of the Country Park by isolating it from existing migratory routes.

The structure of the WDC online response form enables comments to be made for each option or you can make general comments on the Crowborough sites by just answering Questions 23h and/or 26e.

Responses must be made by 17.00 on Friday 24th February.
